All aboard!

What is entrainment?

If you put a stringed instrument near a compatible vibrational source, the strings will tend to tune themselves to that source. Entrainment means the tendency of any vibration to readjust and match other vibrations nearby.

People do this too!

Social entrainment can be observed in the way that groups of friends may tend to move and talk and dress in similar ways, and to have similar aesthetic tastes. When we talk about entrainment among people we often say they become “attuned” to each other.

Entrainment happens. We can intend to entrain. In vocal ensembles (and all sorts of teams), entrainment can also happen without our intention, nor our consent … and even despite our best efforts to remain disentrained.
